By the attached tracing it will be observed

that it has been proposed to build a branch line to the river

to the westward of Mount Louisa, in fact if the authority of

the Canton-Kowloon Railway had been unable to procure the

river frontage at Tai Sha Tau this position would have been

the site of their Depôt, the water is deep close to the bank

and there is a long frontage of 1,000 feet.

Steamers drawing 22 feet have frequently

arrived to discharge, and it is the custom for those steamers

arriving with too deep a draught to discharge here before

proceeding to canton.

Regarding point (c) we submit that a care-

-ful study of the charts of the delta emphasized by our local

knowledge allows of no port or satisfactory connection on this

point, no steamer can with any certainty enter the West River

with a draught of more than 12 feet and here again the reclaim-

-ing of the land is

affecting the entrance to the West River

which lies to the West of Macao.

In conclusion we beg to submit that we

consider that at present the port of Whampoa is a suitable and

efficient moderately deep sea port where freights could easily

be exchanged between these steamers and the railway at Mount

Louisa which would be in direct communication with the North,
